How To Save Money On Groceries

Hey guys, I wanted to go over how to save money on groceries. Groceries are getting so expensive now that its hard to feed a family of 4 without breaking the bank.

I have put together a short list of ways to save on groceries that have helped me in the past stay on budget. I hope this helps you too!

Make A Meal Plan And Stick To It

This is important, going into the store without a plan will almost always make you spend more money and forget what’s on your list! This will make it so you not only over spend on things you don’t need but also have to go back to the store for more items.

Sticking to a meal plan is extremally hard for me because I have a sweet tooth. Every time we go past fresh pumpkin chocolate chip cookies, my body thinks its going to die without them! NO! Stick to the plan!

Go To The Store Only Once

Try not to revisit the store more than once a week. This is just another trip of walking past those deadly cookies! If its something you simply can not go without, hopefully you’ve caught it in time and can order it through Amazon Prime.

Another option is, have your husband stop at the store on his way home. I have noticed that men have a tendency to spend less at the store on junk and they really just want to get in and out so they can get home.

Stick To The List

Avoid over spending and just stick to the list, this is easier said than done… Just look at the floor and speed walking past the cookie isle or whatever your weakness is!

Buy In Bulk For Large Families

Some larger families benefit from buying in bulk. I would make sure to price match and see if its really worth the savings after you’ve added the cost of a membership. I thought I would use our membership way more than I actually did. I think I used it twice, it so wasn’t worth the cost for me.

Use Cash Back Apps

Some apps allow you to scan your products and receipts and they will pay you for it. I’ve used Ibotta quite a bit and it worked really well. The only problem is that i always forget to scan in my stuff. But if its something you can stick to and enjoy getting money back for your purchases, then of course do it!

Only Buy What You Need

What does this mean? I know that if you buy 5 your will save $5.00 but if you don’t have the extra cash right now, skip over those deals. Only buy what you need if you don’t have the money. I have a hard time passing up on a great deal too, but some times you just have to hold yourself back!

Use Coupons

I usually shop at stores that have digital coupons that i can load on my phone before I go. I’m not much of a couponer. There are people out there that do save massive amounts of money on their grocery bill because of it. I just don’t have the patience for it.

Take Advantage Of Sales

Check out your weekly sales in the mailers or a lot of stores now have them online. I like to just pull up Walmart and our version of Kroger (Smiths) and compare prices on big ticket items. I know this may come as a shock, but some times… Walmart is not cheaper than our Smiths or even Amazon.

Take Advantage Of Case Lot Sales

I love case lot sales, seriously the deals you can get on spaghetti sauce and peanut butter are insane! Soups and Mac N Cheese are also some good ones that will save you a lot of money in the long run.

Clearance Items

Don’t be afraid to take a look at the clearance isle to see if there is anything there you can use. Be careful with expiration dates and only buy it if you are sure you are going to use it. Don’t just buy it because its on sale and a good deal.

Make A Budget And Stick To It

Ask For Gift Cards For Holidays And Birthdays

Use them for food, vacations and even gifts for others. We like to ask for Disney gift cards because it helps us save for our Disney trips!

Eat Before You Shop

This a tip my mom gave me a long time ago and until I grew up and started doing my own grocery shopping, I never really understood it. When you go grocery shopping hungry, you automatically are thinking about food.

Being surrounded by food while thinking about how hungry you are will only make you want to buy one of each thing! Go full and stick to the list.

DIY Soaps And Other Items

There are a lot of DIY soaps, laundry soaps and cleaners out there that can save you a lot of money and you will give a lot more product out of just one batch! You could potentially make a whole years worth with the cost of just one product, not to mention most of these DIY items are environmentally friendly.

Shop Somewhere That Gives You Rewards

I don’t know about you but we have Smiths, which is also Kroger. They have a free membership that knocks the cost of your groceries down and helps you earn rewards points towards gas. EVERY LITTLE BIT COUNTS! Even if you are only saving 20 cents a gallon, that still better than not saving at all.

Use Left Overs For Next Meal Or Lunch

Its okay to use your left overs for another meal. Be creative and use that left over meat in a salad for tomorrows lunch or dinner. Using left over chicken for our salads the next night is actually one of my kids favorite meals!

Stick To Off Brands

I know, some off brands just don’t taste quite right. But a lot of items you can buy in the off brand and you or your family will never know the difference!

Most canned vegetables and soups are pretty good! I have found that a lot of the boxed flavored pastas or rice are really not that great…

Per Unit Price Comparison

Shop Online With Amazon Pantry/Prime

Shopping online has saved me so much money! Amazon delivers straight to your door for certain areas for free! We don’t have Amazon Pantry in our area, but if we did I would use them all the time!

Grocery Pick Up

So we have grocery pickup, you order online and then pick up your groceries. How does this save you if there is a pickup fee? Because you aren’t in the store looking at other items, thinking its just one box of cookies… Its just one soda…

Not only does this help your budget but also helps with staying healthy. Our fee is usually $4.99 and its worth every penny to not have to drag the kids in the store and over spend!

Its seriously the best thing that’s ever happened! I love it!
