I recently sold my home, but before I put it on the market we made sure to do some simple updates. It doesn’t matter if you are looking to update your home for yourself or just to sale, upgrades can be expensive. This DIY update will help make those gold door knobs look a more desirable color.
Here’s where we started, just simple 1990’s gold door knobs. I needed and wanted to get rid of these old school knobs but didn’t have the extra cash for 10 new door knobs! Instead we updated it with good quality spray paint.

After

So how did we do it? Simple, like I said good spray paint!
Here’s what you will need to update your door knobs:
Sand paper
Screw drivers
Cardboard
Good spray paint
Where to start?
Step 1
First, remove your door knobs one floor at a time AND make sure to pay attention to the different style of door knobs. I say this because your bedroom closets and any other closets such as pantries do not have locks on them. Bedrooms, bathrooms and your entrance doors usually have locks on them.
Step 2
Wash your door knobs, pantry and bathroom door knobs can have gunk on them. Give them a good wash before continuing on to the next step, which is sanding. This way you don’t gunk up your sand paper.
Step 3
Lightly sand your door knobs so that they loose their shine. You will want to make sure to rough up every area of the knob. Handle, back plate and lock. You don’t want to use really gritty sand paper because it will leave deep scratches in the metal.
Here’s how it should look when you are all done sanding.

Step 4
Outside, put down your card board. If its slightly windy or breezy outside, I would recommend waiting for a different day that is calm and sunny. Spray paint travels in the wind very easily. If you still decide to paint, make sure you are spraying with the wind and standing up wind, not down wind to avoid painting your pants a new color!
Hold your spray can no closer than what is recommend on the back of the can. If you hold the can too close when you spray, there will be a chance that you will get drips in the paint. You are going to put on a couple of coats, so don’t worry if there’s still some gold coming through or that you missed spots.
After your first coat, wait the recommended time before adding your second coat. Its important to wait until each layer dries before adding a new one. This will ensure a nice and even coat and will allow the door knobs to be dried completely through.
After you have put on the desired amount of paint and waited for it to dry, you can then added them back to your doors. Again, wait for them to completely dry to avoid smudges and getting paint on your white doors.
And that’s it! Easy breezy update for a fraction of the cost!
