I recently sold my home, but before I put it on the market we made sure to do some simple updates. It doesn’t matter if you are looking to update your home for yourself or just to sale, upgrades can be expensive. This DIY update will help make those Chrome Faucets look a more desirable color.

(This is a picture our downstairs bathroom, identical faucet to the one shown below)
Because we were already updating the home, we had recently went from gold old school door knobs to nice updated flat gray door knobs. Instead of purchasing 10 new doors we opted to use good quality spray paint for a quick update.
We loved how they turned out so much that we decided to do the same thing to all of our bathroom faucets. We were able to go from shiny chrome to a nice dark oil bronze.
So how did we do it? Simple, like I said good spray paint!
Here’s what you will need to update your faucets:
Sand paper
Painters tape
Old towels, card board or newspaper
Good spray paint
Acetone for paint removal if needed
Where to start?
Step 1
First, clean your faucets to remove and gunk or hard water stains. This will allow you to start with a nice smooth surface.
Step 2
If you opt out of removing your faucets like I did, tape around the faucet. Try to push the painters tape under the lip of the faucet for a good tight fit. Then Place cardboard, towels or newspaper behind faucet on backsplash and anywhere else that overspray might get on. This includes inside the sink.

A good way to do this is to just cut a hole in what ever material you are using and place it around the faucet. Then tape where needed.
Step 3
Lightly sand your faucets so that they loose their shine. You will want to make sure to rough up every area of the faucet. Handle, faucet area and the drain (you will want to tape off the drain as well so you dont have a chrome drain with bronze faucet). You don’t want to use really gritty sand paper because it will leave deep scratches in the metal.

Step 4
If you opt to remove the faucet and paint it outside, put down some cardboard and place the faucet in the middle. If its slightly windy or breezy outside, I would recommend waiting for a different day that is calm and sunny. Spray paint travels in the wind very easily. If you still decide to paint, make sure you are spraying with the wind and standing up wind, not down wind to avoid painting your pants a new color!
Hold your spray can no closer than what is recommend on the back of the can. If you hold the can too close when you spray, there will be a chance that you will get drips in the paint. You are going to put on a couple of coats, so don’t worry if there’s still some chrome coming through or that you missed spots.
After your first coat, wait the recommended time before adding your second coat. Its important to wait until each layer dries before adding a new one. This will ensure a nice and even coat and will allow your faucets to be dried completely through.
After you have put on the desired amount of paint and waited for it to dry, you may then either install the faucets again or remove the tape and protective newspaper/towels. Again, wait for them to completely dry to avoid smudges and getting paint on your sink.
If you do accidently get paint on your sink, walls or vanity, carefully use the acetone to remove the spray paint. Be sure to do this a little at a time to avoid removing paint from your walls.

And that’s it! Easy breezy update for a fraction of the cost!
